Fashion's consumption is set to rise by 63% by 2030. 

 

FASHION ACT NOW is a campaign lead by #XR Fashion Action,

an Extinction Rebellion working group consisting of industry practitioners. 

 

Through yearly summits, Fashion Act Now wants to drive an urgent transformation of fashion - from an industry and culture that consumes and exploits our planet's resources to one that replenishes the natural world and supports its most vulnerable people.

We have a powerful global network ready to take action.

And we have a track record in changing the way people think about fashion. Over the past year, as part of Extinction Rebellion, we have succeeded in placing climate at the top of fashion's agenda, through two provocative campaigns, Boycott Fashion and Cancel Fashion Week. Both challenged everyday practice within the industry and both led to a form of consensus: fashion has to change.

FASHION HURTS

Fashion contributes around 10% of Greenhouse Gas Emissions,

20% freshwater pollution and 35% of micro-plastic pollution in our oceans.

 

If pledges to combat climate change don't go further, we are heading towards a catastrophic 3.4C temperature rise by 2100, rendering much of the planet uninhabitable. This is an emergency and yet fashion's impact grows, unchallenged.

We know our global population can be clothed sustainably and yet there's no plan for change the goes far enough or fast enough. Industry conventions remain ineffective as company profits depend on continued consumption. And every pact, initiative or summit aimed at making fashion sustainable has been bound to prioritise continued profits. 

 

We see a need for further summits and pledges but they must be geared towards effectively cutting resource use. We still need to bring together players that will action change, come to an agreement on the change we need​

 and draw up a plan - but this must be done differently.

FASHION ACT NOW WILL BUILD 

• An alliance of industry players that isn't tied to profit

• A summit that presents a vision to drastically reduce resource use

• A code of conduct

• An activist network that holds fashion to account
